Books are here. Time to study.

April 22nd, 2008 by RVD · 2 Comments

Well, my books finally arrived.  I think I was one of the last students to receive books (as most students got their books on Friday or yesterday).  Anyway, the box wasn’t as big as I thought it would be but it was pretty heavy.  I sort of enjoyed not having books because it allowed me to do things like watch tv guilt-free, go hang out with friends, etc.  Now that the books are here, I will probably have this nagging “I should be studying” feeling in the back of my head.

I was out all day and didn’t get home until around 11pm.  I cracked open the box and I have to confess one thing…I didn’t know what a “bulkpack” was until now.  In undergrad, we just called these sets of photocopied pages, “readers” but oh well.

Yes, there’s a lot of work and a lot of reading to do before classes even start.  I estimate that there are a good 200-300 pages of reading to get done before May 19th.  Hopefully I can find a way to motivate myself to do it.  I was never a particularly good student because I always had trouble motivating myself to actually study.  I am hoping things will be better for me this time around.  People around me have always said that I’m smart (hopefully they’re right) but this is one of those situations where being smart on its own is not going to cut it.  Blood, sweat, and tears are going to be required for success here.

Term 1 consists of 3 classes:

MGMT 621/653 Management of People at Work, Professor John Paul MacDuffie

ACCT 620 Financial Accounting, Professor Richard Lambert

MGEC 603/621, Professor Kent Smetters

MGMT 621/653 has a TON of reading to do.  I hate reading.  But hopefully the reading will flow ok and I’ll do ok.  It looks to me like this class is pretty much into “soft skills” so it won’t be too difficult but reading and reading lots of different cases will be a pain.

ACCT 620 is probably the class where I will have to spend the most effort.  I have never taken an economics or accounting class in my life so I will need to definitely put in a lot more time than the average student in this class.

MGEC 603/621 is another class where I will probably have to spend a lot more time than the average student.  I have no idea what microeconomics is so I’ll need to study a lot.

It looks like I have a lot of work ahead of me.  I hope the class isn’t too competitive (but I know it will be)…I gotta stay out of that bottom 10% :).

You are not alone Dan. I got my books today too. Had the same exact reaction as yours - no more guilt free TV, or dining out, or movies for us for next couple of years. Oh well, I am certain it will be all worth it ;)

Opened the books, put them in the study and now trying to figure out a plan to do some reading before May 19. It will be here before we will know it.

See you soon in the class.

I’m going to watch “Harold and Kumar 2″ this weekend but other than that, some UFC and boxing matches on TV, hanging out with friends, and some photo shoots that I have planned….I’m going to study. j/k…looks like this is going to require a lifestyle change.

But yeah, you’re right. It will be worth it and May 19th will be here before we know it.

I wrote up a quick plan on what to read and study before May 19th and I was originally going to take Sundays off (after all, the bible says to rest on Sunday :)) but no, that didn’t quite work out once I planned this stuff out.
