Wharton MBA for Executives

My parents live in Korea. My dad is actually a retired Professor and former Dean of his school at SNU (Seoul National University). He runs his own research lab now (http://www.ieconslt.com/eng/index.html) and some people say that we look alike (http://www.ieconslt.com/eng/company/main.html). So obviously my dad has been around the world of academia for most of his life. But I’m sad to say that for most of his life, he had never heard for Wharton.

When he was the Dean of the School of Public Health, they had an applicant who had an MBA from Wharton. When the admissions committee reviewed the application, they hadn’t heard of Wharton so they did not grant admission to the student. The student was also a SNU business degree graduate so he told some of his professors what happened. The SNU Business School contacted my dad wondering why they would not grant admission to someone with such a prestigious degree. That is when my dad and the rest of the Professors at the School of Public Health first heard of Wharton and they all realized how prestigious the school is.

So last year when I told my dad that I was applying to go back to school for an MBA and Wharton was my top choice, he knew what I was talking about. As a result, anytime he sees anything related to MBAs, he has now has a sudden interest in reading about it and discussing it.

The other day he said that in the Korean newspaper they had an article with the rankings of the top MBA programs in the world. He said that he saw London Business School (LBS) as #1 and then went down the list as he saw schools like Harvard, Stanfurd, IMD, Insead, etc. But he didn’t see Wharton so he was puzzled. So he looked through the list again and realized…WHARTON was at the top, tied for #1 above LBS in big letters! All was good with the world again.

So that’s good…my guess is that it must’ve been a financial times ranking.
